This section is a part of the chapter: Biochemical pH Buffer Standards of the Zwitterionic Buffer TES (N-Tris-(Hydroxymethyl) Methyl- 2-Aminoethanesulfonic Acid) from 5℃ to 55℃
Good buffers have been widely applied in cell/organ culture over the past half a century as biocompatible pH stabilizers. However, the emergence of severe adverse effects, such as cellular uptake, lysosomal autophagic activation, and visible light-induced cytotoxicity, raises serious questions over its biocompatibility while the underlying mechanism was unclear (Liu et al., 2023; Erfani et al., 2020). Good et al., (1966) and Ferguson et al., (1980) have proposed a select group of zwitterionic buffers for physiological use. The authors have previously reported the pH values of N -[tris(hydroxymethyl) methyl-3-amino]propansulfonic acid (TAPS) (Roy et al., 2006) from 5 to , including . Vega and Bates, (1976) have reported the second dissociation constant, , and related thermodynamic data of TES from to . Roy and associates, (1997) also determined values of TES with thermodynamic quantities from to . The purpose of the current investigation is to provide pH values for the amino acid TES, the structure of which is given in Fig. 1.
