NICU Admissions are so Expensive : A Part from the Book Chapter : Preterm Birth: When is it Too Small to be Born

The child in the picture below was born of a 42-year-old woman and that was the only risk factor found. The child, however, did well in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and was weaned from NICU when she started sucking well on the mother’s breast. NICU services are not readily available in most low-resource countries yet for those with the services, NICU admissions are so expensive. There is not enough research curried out to ascertain how much PPROM contributes to preterm labour in low-resource-countries. In the United States, however, PPROM is responsible for one-third of all preterm births each year and affects 120,000 pregnancies.
