This section is a part of the chapter: Real Time Assessment of Patients’ Body Oxygen Balance and Tissue Metabolic Score (TMS) The electron transfer (oxidation/reduction) down the respiratory chain results in the production of adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP). Concomitantly with electron transport, the respiratory chain components switch between reduced and oxidized states, each of which has different spectroscopic properties. Hydrolysis of the pyrophosphate bonds provides the energy necessary for the cell's work. In order to assess the energy demand, it is necessary to measure different organ-specific parameters. For example, in the brain, the energy demand can be evaluated by measuring the extracellular levels of K+ that reflect the activity of the major ATP consumer - Na+/K+ATPase . In the heart, most of the energy is consumed by muscle contraction activity. On the other hand, the energy supply mechanism is the same for all tissues: oxygenated blood reaching the capillary bed releases O2 that diffuses into the cells. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate tissue energy supply by monitoring the following four parameters in all tissues: tissue blood flow (TBF), tissue blood volume (TBV), tissue oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) and mitochondrial NADH redox state How to Cite Mayevsky, A., Tolmasov, M., & Mandelbaum, M.
