The Aetiology of AKI in the ICU can be Classified : A Part from the Book Chapter : Prevention, Recognition, and Treatment of Acute Kidney Injury in ICU

The aetiology of AKI in the ICU can be classified into three categories: prerenal, intrinsic, and postrenal. Prerenal AKI is caused by reduced renal perfusion due to hypovolemia, hypotension, or decreased cardiac output. Intrinsic AKI is caused by damage to the renal parenchyma due to ischemia, inflammation, infection, or toxicity. Postrenal AKI is caused by a blockage in the outflow of urine due to obstruction of mechanical (stone, tumour, clots, catheters) or functional origin (neurogenic bladder). The treatment of the underlying cause of AKI depends on the specific aetiology and may involve fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, or surgical intervention.
